LIVING FOR GOD™

"Why Has God Forgotten Me?"

By Calvin and Lisa Wulf

“Be still and know that I am God.”  Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me.  I feel like I’m in a fog and I can’t find God anywhere,” she whispers into the phone.

“You just sound overwhelmed and lost,” consoles her friend.  “I know you’re having a rough time.  Is there something I can do?”

“I don’t know.  I’m already doing everything I can think of  – praying, reading the Bible, and going to church.  Why has God forgotten me?”

Ever feel separated from God?  It’s like wandering in the desert.  Our lips are parched.  Thoughts scatter like sand in a storm.  We suffer alone in desolation as we sink deeper and deeper into a bottomless pit.  This battle against despair is the desert of our souls.

However bleak the desert may be, it offers an invitation to encounter God.  But our natural tendency is to run away from distress.  We just want to escape.  Yet could the desert actually be a gift?  If we hold on, God will meet us there.

Being in the desert is like wandering in the wilderness.  The ancient Hebrews were tested and blessed there.  They saw proof after proof of God’s mighty hand.  We may be desperately thirsting for this too.  But it won’t happen unless we stay still and focus on him.

The dryness of the desert may bring darkness to our souls.  But remember that if we wait, we will encounter God.  He’ll provide the radiance that our spirits crave.  They say when you’re lost in the woods the best thing is to stay where you are till someone rescues you.  That someone is God.

Facing into the desert is scary.  Try these tips:

·        Remain where you are.  Let the Good Shepherd find you.

·        Don’t sit alone.  Find loving fellowship.

·        Seek creative silence.  Listen for the voice of God.

Remember his soft words, “Be still and know that I am God.”  Stop running and just listen.  Wait for God to meet you.  He will lead you from an arid place to the refreshing streams of his love.
